3 Catherine Compton-Lilly (ed.) & Stuart Greene (ed.). Bedtime Stories and Book Reports: Connecting Parent Involvement and Family Literacy (Language and Literacy Series)
New York: Teachers College Press 2011 0807751359 / 9780807751350 Paper back New 1.3 x 15.9 x 22.2 cm
This book brings together the newest research on parent involvement and family literacy, two strands of research that rarely exist in conversation with one another. The discussion highlights how race, class, gender, and history serve as potent factors that shape children's school experiences. Each chapter offers portraits of real families and schools that illustrate parents' awareness of their children's school progress, their perceptions of teachers, and their involvement in teaching their children life lessons that extend beyond school achievement. Translating theory into action, this resource: extends conversations about parent involvement and family literacy across time and multiple spaces, home, school, church, and community; challenges accepted notions by listening to parents' counter-stories of how they are involved with their children both in and out of school; and highlights the significance of race, class, gender, religion, sexual preference, and history in literacy learning and schooling.

Minnesota: Redleaf Press 2002 1929610092 / 9781929610099 Paper back New 0.8 x 6 x 8.8 inches
In spite of great advances in the field of early childhood education over the last ten years, questions rather than answers seem to dominate today's professional conversations about young children and classroom practices. Teaching and learning are such messy and complex business that they cannot be reduced to a set of facts, a series of solutions, or a number of guidelines. And just when a question seems to have been answered, other questions arise and beg for investigation. Teaching young children is truly a continual learning process. This book aims to support the lifelong learning of those who work with young children-including, but not limited to, early childhood teachers, child care providers, child life specialists, and early interventionists.

Jessica Kingsley Publishers 2006 1843103176 / 9781843103172 Paper back New 15.2 x 1.1 x 23.5 cm
All too often child victims of abuse either remain silent or are not listened to when they do decide to speak of their experiences, but The Truth is Longer Than a Lie gives abused children and young people a voice. This groundbreaking book reveals what young victims have to say about abuse and its effects on their lives; their views on the reasons for abuse; their opinions of abusers and non-offending parents; and how they felt about disclosing their experiences. Significantly, this book provides important insights into children's perceptions of the professionals who intervened - to protect them, to prosecute the abuser or to provide therapeutic counselling. The authors examine societal factors that increase children's vulnerability, and propose measures for preventing abuse. They outline the requirements of ethically sound research, including appropriate interviewing techniques, and conclude with recommendations for future research. The Truth is Longer Than a Lie is invaluable reading for social workers, child protection workers, counsellors, legal professionals and anyone working with abused children.

Fascinating vignettes from 50 different families and their highly intelligent children are included, and the children are classified into five Levels of intelligence. Testing, test scores, and interpretations of scores are explained in a new, eye-opening way. Parents and teachers will be able to compare a child’s behaviors and developmental milestones to those of children in the five Levels chapters, and thus estimate their child’s intellectual level and the implications for educational planning. Ann Hoffmann's example will inspire and delight the reader, reminding us of what matters most in education and that if we love what we do, anything is possible. Awakening Children's Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference, Laura E. Berk.
13 Laura E. Berk. Awakening Children's Minds: How Parents and Teachers Can Make a Difference
New York: Oxford University Press 2001 0195171551 / 9780195171556 Paper back New 22.9 x 2.5 x 15.5 cm
Parents and teachers today face a swirl of conflicting theories about child rearing and educational practice. Indeed, current guides are contradictory, oversimplified, and at odds with current scientific knowledge. Now, in Awakening Children's Minds, Laura Berk cuts through the confusion of competing theories, offering a new way of thinking about the roles of parents and teachers and how they can make a difference in children's lives. This is the first book to bring to a general audience, in lucid prose richly laced with examples, truly state-of-the-art thinking about child rearing and early education. Berk's central message is that parents and teachers contribute profoundly to the development of competent, caring, well-adjusted children. In particular, she argues that adult-child communication in shared activities is the wellspring of psychological development. These dialogues enhance language skills, reasoning ability, problem-solving strategies, the capacity to bring action under the control of thought, and the child's cultural and moral values. Berk explains how children weave the voices of more expert cultural members into dialogues with themselves. When puzzling, difficult, or stressful circumstances arise, children call on this private speech to guide and control their thinking and behavior. In addition to providing clear roles for parents and teachers, Berk also offers concrete suggestions for creating and evaluating quality educational environments--at home, in child care, in preschool, and in primary school--and addresses the unique challenges of helping children with special needs. Parents, Berk writes, need a consistent way of thinking about their role in children's lives, one that can guide them in making effective child-rearing decisions. Awakening Children's Minds gives us the basic guidance we need to raise caring, thoughtful, intelligent children.

16 Michael Ungar. We Generation: Raising Socially Responsible Kids
Toronto: McClelland & Stewart 2009 0771087136 / 9780771087134 Paper back Very good-nearly fine (Ex-library with usual stamps and sticker) Not issued 6 x 0.6 x 9 inches
Engaging and timely, this book is an invaluable resource for parents who want their children to become socially responsible and globally aware adults As youth culture seems to grow more self-centred and obsessed with "Me,"Michael Ungar shows us that, in fact, children today are as willing as ever to think "We." Given the right signals, and some important changes to the homes we live in, our schools and communities, kids will seek out close connections with the adults in their lives. Like generations before them, they want to be noticed for the contributions they can make. What they need, though, is compassion and encouragement from parents, and some careful attention to their most important connections, those made at home. Combining inspiring stories taken from his clinical work with families and children with expert research gathered from around the world, Ungar reveals how the close connections kids crave, and the support adults provide, can help kids realize their full potential - and how it can also protect them from the dangers of delinquency, whether it be drug abuse, violence, or early sexual activity. At a time when global issues and activism have come to the forefront, We Generation offers a fresh, optimistic way of thinking about our children’s true nature and potential.

Complex Issues in Child Custody Evaluations, Philip M. Stahl.
19 Philip M. Stahl. Complex Issues in Child Custody Evaluations
Thousand Oaks: SAGE Publications 1999 0761919090 / 9780761919094 Paperback Like New 0.5 x 6 x 9.2 inches
"This text is excellent and very timely. Philip Michael Stahl's second volume is the perfect supplement to his Conducting Child Custody Evaluations because it deals with specific issues of great concern to evaluators: parental alienation, allegations of sexual abuse, domestic violence, move-away situations, and high conflict families. The chapter dealing with child considerations is also very well done. His discussion of developmental considerations is clear and supported by the latest research in the field. I also liked his treatment of children's reaction to parental conflict, weighing the needs of the individual child with the needs of the sibling group, and giving the child a voice while protecting their privacy. I also appreciated his discussion of components of the evaluator's recommendation, use of psychological testing, Rosemary Vasquez's discussion of cultural issues, tackling the terror of testifying and ethical issues. Phil Stahl has written a very important text. It is timely, well written, and comprehensive. Nice work!!!" --Hugh McIsaac, Oregon Family Institute When performing a custody evaluation, how do professionals deal with the issue of domestic violence? What impact does one parent's moving away have on the evaluation? How should an evaluator handle high-conflict divorces? Over the past five to ten years, there has been a significant increase in the use of child custody evaluations by the courts. At the same time, the issues have become more complex and difficult. In this book, the author provides a theoretical and practical understanding of many of the factors that make custody evaluations complex. A key component is the integration of disparate research findings into a comprehensive resource that will enable the evaluator and the court to understand these complex issues. A second component is to provide a thorough understanding of the fact that divorce brings with it a set of complex needs, and evaluators and the courts must develop a paradigm for weighing these needs in a comprehensive manner. This book provides that paradigm.
